These images show the first public appearance of Bishop Rolando Álvarez, five months after he was banished from Nicaragua. He made a courtesy visit to Seville, Spain.
But his trip to the country did not end here. The bishop also visited Asturias, a city in the northwest part of Spain. There, he collected the Libertas International Award. Bishop Álvarez had been unable to attend the award ceremony, which was held on May 29. Archbishop Jesús Sanz Montes received the award on his behalf.

Bishop Rolando's crime was his willingness to denounce the abuses of the powers of the moment. He pointed out the abuses, the lies, the manipulations, the deceit and the hijacking of fundamental rights by the "rulers", who fight with those who contradict them and he did not applaud their twisted and dehumanizing ideas.
During his visit to Spain, the Nicaraguan bishop also prayed before the Virgin of Covadonga.
Bishop Álvarez was exiled from his native country by the Ortega regime on January 14. He traveled to Rome together with another bishop, priests and seminarians as a result of the Vatican's mediation.
The Bishop had previously been imprisoned, where he was sentenced to 26 years for conspiracy and other crimes. Since his arrival in Rome, he had not been seen in public at any other time thus far.
