Pope Francis emphasized the role of the family doctor in a meeting with participants of an event promoted by the organization, Somos Community Care in collaboration with the Pontifical Academy for Life.

The presence of the family doctor does in fact help surround the sick person with a network of affection, fellowship and solidarity, which goes beyond the diagnostic-therapeutic phase, reinforcing human relationships and making suffering a moment of communion to be experienced together.
Somos Community Care is a network of physicians who help people in need receive basic care in the United States. During the pandemic, their work was important in getting vaccines to people who were most neglected.
