In the Basilica of St. Mark, Pope Francis venerated the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist. After the Eucharistic celebration, he paused for a moment of prayer before heading back to Rome.
The Basilica is known as the “golden church” because of its Byzantine mosaics. It was built to house the relics of the evangelist, who is the patron saint of the city. His remains are in the golden altarpiece inside the basilica.
