Pope Francis traveled to Hungary almost a year ago—an international visit where he sent important political and religious messages. In Hungary, the Pope expressed his gratitude for the welcoming of Ukrainian refugees.

The Pope conveyed this same message in the Vatican to a group of pilgrims from Hungary, who he met on the occasion of the first anniversary of this apostolic journey.

POPE FRANCIS
As a friend, I have also met people who have suffered: refugees, the poor and the marginalized. I thank you because you have an open heart towards refugees, Ukrainian refugees who have left their country because of the war.

Prior to this meeting, Pope Francis held a 20-minute private audience with the new president of Hungary, Tamás Sulyok, who after meeting with the Pope, expressed on his social networks that, as a devout Catholic, it was an honor to be with the pontiff.

This comes two months after his predecessor, Katalin Novak, resigned from office. The former president had met the Pope twice at the Vatican and also on the Pope's trip to Hungary.
