While it is well known that Pope Francis is a fan of the game of soccer, it turns out that he is also a fan of the game of checkers. He made this evident during a private audience with members of the Italian Draughts Federation on the occasion of their 100th anniversary.
POPE FRANCIS
In fact it requires intelligence, skill and attention, but not great means and facilities. It is one of those games with which, wherever you are, you can easily create a moment of meeting and fun: all you need is a chessboard and checkers, two players, and it is a nice way to get together.
The Pope went on to say that the game of checkers even unites migrants when they arrive on new lands as they sometimes play it together with the people who welcome them.
Before closing the audience, Pope Francis challenged the members to keep moments of spirituality alive during their events.
