Rome is one of the cities topping the list of European destinations most popular with tourists this Easter.
According to estimates by the Lazio Bilateral Board of Tourism, an estimated 455,000 people will visit the Eternal City during the Easter season. This is an increase of more than 5% from last year.
In January, 40% of hotel rooms and other accommodations for the months of March and April were already sold out.
With these figures increasing every year, Rome is becoming one of the most popular destinations for travelers.
Millions of people visit Rome's historical monuments, such as the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and the Roman imperial area.
But many also visit the city for its spiritual and religious significance related to the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus.
According to the Vatican, about 20,000 pilgrims attended last year's traditional Good Friday Stations of the Cross at the Colosseum. Even though Pope Francis was not present as he had been admitted to the hospital a few days earlier.
But on Easter Sunday, the Pope appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to impart the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing for 100,000 pilgrims.
