An unprecedented period in the Catholic Church began—the coexistence of two popes in the same territory for almost ten years.
Now, in a new book, Pope Francis recounts in detail how the relationship worked between the two. The book, titled “The Successor,” was written by Vatican journalist Javier Martinez-Brocal, collaborator and former director of Rome Reports and correspondent of the ABC Spanish newspaper.
In the book, Pope Francis praises his predecessor for his ability to offer a broader perspective.
He had that ability to broaden the vision to help me make a good decision. He would never say, “I don't agree.” I do remember him saying, “This is fine. But we should also take into account this other thing…”
The last public meeting between the two was after the consistory of 2022, a few months before Pope Benedict XVI passed away.
The new book will be published in Spain on April 3 with plans to be translated into several languages.
