The Italian magazine, “Credere”, published a preview of an interview with Pope Francis. In it, the Fiducia supplicans statement that generated several reactions was once again discussed. And the Pope reaffirmed his position.
“No one is shocked if I give a blessing to an entrepreneur who is possibly exploiting people—and that is a very serious sin. Whereas they are scandalized if I give it to a homosexual…This is hypocrisy.”
The complete interview was published the following day. In it, Pope Francis explains that the key to the reading of the document is acceptance. And he insisted that no one should be denied a blessing.
“But I don't bless a 'homosexual marriage', I bless two people who love each other and I also ask them to pray for me.”
The Fiducia supplicans declaration was published in December 2023 and explains in what cases a priest may bless a same-sex couple or couples in an irregular situation.
The document stresses that blessings should in no case constitute an endorsement of the relationship. However, there are bishops who see Fiducia supplicans as ambiguous, saying it suggests an implicit acceptance of a same-sex relationship.
