A bishop in Haiti has offered himself as a hostage in exchange for the release of the six nuns, and other passengers, who were kidnapped by a group of armed men while traveling to the country's capital.

In a statement, Bishop Dumas expressed his willingness to make an exchange and asked that all hostages be released immediately.

Pope Francis, after praying the Angelus, also expressed his concern and called for an end to violence in the country.

POPE FRANCIS
I have painfully learned of the news of the kidnapping in Haiti of a group of people, including six nuns. In earnestly requesting their release, I pray for social harmony in the country and I invite everyone to put an end to the violence that causes so much suffering to this beloved people.

Haiti is experiencing extreme poverty and an increase in violence, due to clashes between armed gangs.
