Pope Francis has asked for a special preparation for the next Jubilee with a focus on prayer.

POPE FRANCIS
We begin today the Year of Prayer, that is, a year dedicated to rediscovering the great value and absolute need for prayer.

The Pope announced this at the Angelus on January 21. Now the Dicastery for Evangelization has organized some initiatives to promote this project.

The centerpiece will be the “School of Prayer” in which Pope Francis will meet with different groups of people. They will pray together, exploring the different types of prayer: intercession, petition, contemplation and thanksgiving. The Dicastery has not yet announced the dates or given details about the groups. But they described the year in a unique way.

This is not a year with specific initiatives. Rather, it is a privileged time to rediscover the value of prayer.

Between January and May, the Dicastery will also publish eight texts on prayer by international authors. They will be available in the Vatican bookstore and on the Jubilee website. For the time being, however, they are only in Italian.

The Dicastery also recommends that local communities revisit the 38 catecheses on prayer Pope Francis delivered between May 6, 2020 and June 6, 2021.

POPE FRANCIS
Today, I would like to focus on the prayer we can do from a passage in the Bible. The words of Scripture were not written to remain imprisoned on paper—parchment or papyrus—but to be received by a prayerful person, allowing them to blossom in his or her own heart.

On the Solemnity of the Ascension on May 9, the Papal Bull of Convocation of the Jubilee will be published, specifying the beginning and end dates of the Holy Year.
