This is the third year that Pope Francis has conferred different ministries to groups of lay people. He does so every 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time at the Mass of the Word of God, established in 2019.

During the celebration, the candidates approach the Pope. This year, there were 11 lay people from different parts of the world, such as Brazil, Germany and South Korea.

To those of the ministry of lector, the blessing is imparted and a Bible is given to them.

-Receive the book of the Holy Scriptures and faithfully transmit the Word of God so that it may blossom and bear fruit in people's hearts.
-Amen.

He does the same with those of the ministry of catechist but, instead of a Bible, he gives them a crucifix.

Receive this sign of our faith, cathedra of the truth and charity of Christ. Announce it with your life, works and word.

In January 2021, Pope Francis modified the Code of Canon Law to allow women to have access to the ministries of lector and acolyte. Months later, he instituted the ministry of catechist.

This was not an ordination, but rather a way of highlighting some of the tasks performed by the faithful.

Lectors take part in the Mass by delivering the 1st or 2nd reading. Catechists work with the diocesan bishop to transmit the faith through pastoral work.

All candidates for the ministries undergo formation to prepare for their role in the life of the Church.
