On a visit to Rome, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, met privately with Pope Francis to discuss the situation of the Middle East.

Following their meeting, the Cardinal addressed members of a university in Rome, pointing out that peace and dialogue must be built through an international collaboration.

So it will have to take into account the various sensitivities, the various cultural approaches, not only European, but above all local. It is much more difficult, but it will have to start from there. It will also be truer. And it will have to be done, not out of need or necessity, but out of love.

Speaking with journalists after his speech, the Cardinal stressed the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He described it as “a situation of extreme poverty.” In northern Gaza specifically, the Latin Patriarchate said: “There are no houses. There is no water. There is no electricity.”

Cardinal Pizzaballa pointed out that Gaza is receiving aid from the Jordanian monarchy. And he continues to have regular communication with the only Catholic Church in Gaza, Holy Family parish.
