This is the moment when Margrethe of Denmark greeted the Danish people for the first time in 1972, after being proclaimed queen. After 52 years at the head of the crown, she has announced her abdication.

Her son and his wife will become King Frederick X and Queen Mary.

Although the future King and Queen belong to the evangelical Church of Denmark, they were in an audience at the Vatican with Pope Francis in 2018. They brought the Pope this vase from Royal Copenhagen, the famous Danish porcelain factory.

Queen Margrethe II announced her abdication in her traditional end-of-year speech. Until now, she was the only remaining female monarch in Europe, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
