The last standing sexual assault case against defrocked Cardinal Theodore McCarrick has been suspended, meaning he is no longer facing active criminal charges in the United States.
The state of Wisconsin suspended the charges against McCarrick, citing his “incompetence” to stand trial because of dementia. But the case may be reviewed later this year.
The ruling in the Wisconsin court comes just a few months after the state of Massachusetts did the same. However, there is a possibility it could be taken up in both New Jersey and New York civil courts.
Theodore McCarrick was the first ever U.S. bishop to face criminal charges for sexual abuse.
Now 93 years old, the former cardinal and Archbishop of Washington, D.C. was defrocked in 2019 following credible sex abuse accusations. In 2020, the Vatican released a 450-page investigative report that documented how he was able to rise through Church hierarchy.
