The Vatican is calling all Catholic artists for a competition. The winner of this newly announced art contest will be awarded over $130,000 and have their art displayed in a temporary exhibition in St. Peter's Basilica.
The initiative entails painting an original version of the traditional 14 Stations of the Cross. It is free and open to anyone in the world.
The application form will officially open on the St. Peter's Basilica website on January 8 and will remain open until the end of the month.
The application requires the submission of 10 original works of art. If accepted into the competition, artists will then submit an original sketch of the 12th station, “Jesus Dies on the Cross.”
The winner of the competition will be announced this September. And the 14 Stations of the Cross paintings they create will be temporarily displayed in St. Peter's Basilica for the 2026 Lenten season.
