The month of June kicked off with Pope Francis' envoy for the peace mission in Ukraine traveling to country's capital city. During this visit, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi met with Ukrainian President Zelensky and the two discussed how to build peace.

That same day in Rome, Pope Francis went to the Gemelli hospital for surgery. His surgeon explained that the Pope's previous operations had produced several internal scars that created his painful hernia.

After three hours of surgery, the medical team that operated on Pope Francis delivered the good news.

Good afternoon to all. First of all, the Holy Father is well. I think this is the news you and the whole world have been waiting for.

In a tweet, the Pope expressed his gratitude for all the messages, prayers and support he had received during his hospitalization. And to ensure a full recovery, the Vatican cancelled all of Pope Francis' activities through June 18.

After more than a week in the hospital, the Pope was discharged and traveled to the Basilica of St. Mary Major to pray in front of an image of the Virgin.

For his first public appearance, Pope Francis received a standing ovation.

During the last Angelus of the month, the Pope remembered Emanuela Orlandi—the daughter of a Vatican employee who disappeared 40 years ago.

POPE FRANCIS
These days mark the 40th anniversary of the disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi. I would like to express, once again, my closeness to the family members, especially to her mother, and assure them of my prayers. I keep in mind all families who bear the pain of a departed loved one.

June ended with the celebration of the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. The Mass began with a procession of newly appointed archbishops from around the world.
