Throughout his pontificate, Francis has maintained a close relationship with the people of the Phillippines.
Pope Francis met with a group of members from a Filipino archdiocese who were on a Marian pilgrimage to Rome to celebrate their Golden Jubilee. There, he emphasized the importance of taking care of both humanity and the environment.
POPE FRANCIS
I urge your parishes and communities to be exemplary in practicing works of mercy and being close to all, especially families, young people, the sick, the elderly and the poor, with the charity of Jesus. This also requires us to be responsible stewards of creation, in the knowledge that care for each other and care for our common home are intimately linked.

He even traveled to the country in 2015. While there, he visited families and communities that had been devastated by a super-typhoon. Amidst the ruin, he offered a message of hope to the Filipino people.
POPE FRANCIS
Many of you have asked the Lord, looking at Him: Why, Lord? And the Lord answers to each one of you, to your heart, Christ responds with His heart. It's the only thing I can tell you. Let us look to Christ, He is the Lord and He understands us because He underwent all the trials that we go through.
Home to over 85 million Catholics, the Phillippines has one of the highest percentages of Catholics of any country in the world.
