Pope Francis reflects on example of a Spanish mystic to whom kings asked for advice

María de Jesús de Ágreda was highly regarded by kings, who even sought her advice at the time of the Spanish Empire's decline. She is considered one of the great evangelizers of New Mexico and Texas because of her gift of bilocation.

While addressing participants of a congress in Rome, Pope Francis reflected on the fact that María de Jesús is considered a great mystic.

POPE FRANCIS
She was an exceptional woman, whom you have described as “in love with the Scriptures,” a “Marian mystic” and “evangelizer of America.”

The Pope pointed out that María de Jesús is a reminder of three lessons that a contemplative woman can give to the Church. The first is silence because it helps us listen. The second is mysticism, which is the relationship with God that is born from silence. And third, the missionary nature, which reminds Pope Francis of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, another cloistered nun who stood out for her evangelizing spirit.
