This is a historic image. It is the culmination of years of work on the Basilica of the Sagrada Família. For the first time, the towers dedicated to the four evangelists have been lit.
The top of each is crowned by a figure of the four symbols for each writer. St. John's eagle; Matthew, a human; Mark, a lion; and Luke, an ox. These towers, 442 feet high, are the third tallest of the Basilica.
To celebrate this moment, the Nuncio to Spain and Bishop of Barcelona celebrated a Mass.
The towers are the work of the sculptor Xavier Medina-Campeny and, with their completion, the Sagrada Família is now in its final stretch. The Basilica is a project that began more than 140 years ago and that is expected to be completed in 2026, coinciding with the centenary of the original architect's death.
