After a long legal battle between her parents and the English courts, Indi Gregory, the eight-month-old baby who was to be transferred to a Vatican hospital, died at 1:45 a.m. London time on Monday.

Members of the family's legal team confirmed this through a tweet. It includes the words of Indi's father who, also on behalf of his wife, said they felt "angry, heartbroken and ashamed."

The last appeal the family filed to try to keep Indi alive was rejected on Friday afternoon. The judge ruled that the little girl would be moved to hospice and taken off life support.

Shortly before Indi's life support was removed, the director of the Vatican Press Office told reporters that Pope Francis had sent a message to the baby's parents. He said he was praying for her and for all children suffering from disease or war.

Indi, who had been granted Italian citizenship after an emergency Council of Ministers, was to be transferred to the Vatican hospital, Bambino Gesù. The hospital had accepted the request to welcome and care for her. But, due to the English court's ruling, she never arrived in Italy.

Now, Indi's parents stress that, on their daughter's behalf, they will continue to fight against euthanasia and against "modernity", which they say stifles the weak and defenseless.
