According to Yonhap News Agency, Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin had a phone conversation with Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

Jin's office reported that the two discussed bilateral relations, the Korean Peninsula and problems that relate to the region. The Foreign Minister expressed his hope for the two states to strengthen relations leading up to World Youth Day Seoul in 2027.

In August this year, Pope Francis announced that the capital city of South Korea would become the second Asian country to host the next World Youth Day.

Archbishop Gallagher reportedly told the Foreign Minister that the Vatican wants to continue to foster their relationship with South Korea. In return, Jin thanked him for the Vatican's constant interest and support in issues related to the Korean Peninsula.

Pope Francis traveled to South Korea in August 2014 for a 5-day visit to the country. It was the first papal visit since John Paul II in 1989.
