The United Nations reports that over 100 million people around the world have been forcibly displaced from their home countries due to persecution, violence and human rights violations. By the end of 2022, this number grew by 21%.

Caritas Internationalis is on the frontlines of this global migration issue.

ALISTAIR DUTTON
Secretary General, Caritas Internationalis

We can see that migration is increasing already and I anticipate that (it) will become worse.

The migrant crisis has been especially difficult in Europe—specifically in Italy. Over 130,000 refugees have arrived to the country since the beginning of 2023. These numbers show that this year Italy is on track to have a new record number of arrivals.

The Caritas community is focusing on three durable solutions for refugees: local integration, resettlement to a third country and reintegration into the country of origin. They believe the war in Ukraine highlights the challenge of meeting the needs of refugees.

LEILA BODEUX
Asylum & Migration Officer, Caritas Europe

We think, as Caritas Europa, it is time for Europe to do more and enhance this pathway and offer more resettlement places, not just in the discourse but also in practice.

Beyond Europe, Caritas Internationalis is bringing aid to migrants in all corners of the world. They strive to enable refugees to rebuild their lives in a safe and dignified way.
