Pope Francis met with Matteo Garrone, director of the film Io Capitano together with the main characters of the movie.
The Pope shook hands with actors Seydou Sar and Moustapha Fall. He also greeted Mamadou Kouassi, an Ivory Coast-born immigrant whose life experiences inspired the film.
The film tells the story of two children who travel from Senegal to Italy, risking their lives and enduring numerous horrors such as torture by the police in Libya and their journey across the Mediterranean Sea.
At the Venice Film Festival, Garrone received an award for best director. Actor Seydou Sar also won the award for promising young actor.
During the papal visit, the group was accompanied by Jesuit Fr. Antonio Spadaro, former director of the magazine, Civiltà Cattolica, who was recently appointed Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education.
After the meeting, the Dicastery for Communication premiered the film at the Vatican Film Library.
