Known as the "Markowa Samaritans," this Catholic family of Józef, Wiktoria and their seven children sheltered Jewish families from the Nazis in Poland during World War II.
The year was 1944. The Ulmas, who lived on a farm, took in eight members of a persecuted family that had managed to escape from the Auschwitz concentration camp.
It was on March 24th when, following a tip, the Nazis arrived at the Ulma's house and murdered the Jewish family. They also killed Józef, Wiktoria and their seven children, including the baby they were expecting.
Their selfless acts made the Ulma family known as a martyr family who were witnesses to Christian life not only during the Nazi occupation of Poland, but throughout their entire lives.
