The Community of Sant'Egidio called for a more streamlined bureaucratic process to improve the integration of migrants and refugees in Europe. In Italy alone, more than 100,000 migrants arrived in 2023, which is more than double than last year. And integrating them has been a challenge.

Many migrants have academic degrees but they are not recognized by local authorities. The President of Sant'Egidio emphasizes that many migrants and refugees can fill job positions in various fields.

Immigration must be managed in a more rational way in both the medium and long term. There is an issue in Italy: a bureaucratic issue with the slowness of the process for the integration and reception of people.

There is also the problem of unaccompanied minors. The President is concerned with the slow bureaucratic pace that prevents local families from adopting migrant children.

The migrant crisis in Europe is an ongoing source of tension between governments. But the Sant'Egidio Community urges politicians to not lose sight of the fundamental fact that immigrants are not numbers but people.

The first proposal is saving human lives. Saving human lives.

The Community of Sant'Egidio was founded in Rome after the Second Vatican Council and is present in more than 70 countries. They work at multiple levels—at the diplomatic level, Sant'Egidio promotes peace in war-torn regions. At the social level, their initiatives serve to help those most in need. In Italy they especially focus on the integration of migrants and refugees.
