In just a few days, Pope Francis will embark on his 43rd apostolic journey. He will visit Mongolia from August 31 to September 4. It marks the first time a pope has visited this Asian country.
Mongolia has a population of 3 million people and only 1.3% is Christian. More than half of the population is Buddhist and the rest practice shamanic traditions or Islam.
In fact, one of the highlights of the trip will be the interreligious ecumenical meeting at the Hun Theater, which will take place on September 3. Cardinal Giorgio Marengo, an Italian missionary in Mongolia, says that dialogue with people of other religions is an ongoing affair for the small Catholic community. He hopes that the Pope's visit can improve knowledge of the Catholic Church and the faith in a country where Christ is not well known.
