This Nicaraguan college, the Central American University, was founded by the Jesuits 63 years ago. But the country's legal authorities consider it to be 'a center of terrorism.' As a result, they have ordered the seizure of the university's money as well as its properties.

The Jesuits have released a strong statement holding the government responsible for the decision. They deny the accusations of terrorism and say that the measure is 'drastic, unexpected and unjust.' For this reason, they ask that 'the growing government aggression cease.'

This is not the first sign of increasing government pressure on Church institutions in the country. In 2022, the Vatican nuncio as well as Mother Teresa's religious congregation were expelled and the bishop of Matagalpa, Rolando Álvarez, was imprisoned. Moreover, dozens of charitable entities have been financially stifled by the government, which has prevented them from receiving foreign funding.
