Pope Francis began his 42nd apostolic trip to World Youth Day in Lisbon. He was welcomed by the Portugese President at the Figo Maduro air base.
Before he took off to Lisbon, the Pope met with a group of young people who live in a rehabilitation center and are unable to attend World Youth Day.
His trip officially started at 7 o'clock in the morning, when the Pope departed from the Vatican to the Roma-Fiumicino airport. The plane flew over Italy, France and Spain before landing in Portugal.
Upon landing, the Pope descended from the plane in his wheelchair. This is his first trip since his surgery in June.
Pope Francis arrived on the second day of World Youth Day that will last until August 6th.
