The Monastic Community of Taizé has a new leader: British Anglican, Brother Matthew Thorpe. He will take office on December 3, becoming the third superior of this community since its founding in 1940.

Thorpe succeeds Brother Alois, who has been at the head of Taizé for 18 years. He assumed the responsibility of leading the community in 2005, after the murder of its founder, Roger Schutz, who was stabbed to death in a church by a mentally ill woman.

In an official communiqué, Brother Alois explained that such a ministry has no age limit or time limit for leaders, but that the time had come for another brother to take over.

The Taizé Community, known for promoting ecumenism, was founded in France. It aims to promote faith and unity among Christians, especially among young people.
