Five months have passed since earthquakes devastated parts of Turkey and Syria. In Aleppo, Syria, the parish of St. Francis of Assisi cares for 400 children affected by this disaster, offering them food, classes and workshops.

According to UNICEF, 3.7 million children are still in an unstable situation after the earthquakes. Many do not have access to basic food or supplies and continue to carry serious psychological scars.

Syrians are facing a worsening humanitarian crisis. As I stressed to the humanitarian task force this week in Geneva, the needs of Syrians must be at the center of our focus and humanitarian action must be depoliticized.

By caring for hundreds of children even amidst a lack of supplies, St. Francis of Assisi parish in Aleppo is filling a crucial need in Syria's humanitarian crisis.
