A total of 194 countries participated in the 43rd Food and Agriculture Organization Conference or FAO. The Holy See also attended as a permanent observer.
Pope Francis sent a message expressing his concern regarding poverty, inequality and the lack of basic resources such as drinking water and education affecting many people around the world. He has repeated this on several occasions. One of them was during his visit to the FAO in 2014.
POPE FRANCIS
There is food for everyone, but not everyone is able to eat as waste, excessive consumption and the use of food for other purposes happens before our very eyes.
According to the latest FAO data, the lack of food affected more than 800 million people in the world in 2021—150 million more than before the coronavirus pandemic.
This year, the FAO's message calls for a greater respect for local communities and cultural diversity, which it says cannot be altered or destroyed in the name of a short-sighted idea of progress that risks 'ideological colonization.'
