Spanish Cardinal Luis Ladaria has served in the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith for nearly 25 years. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Secretary in 2008 and in 2017, Pope Francis made him Prefect with a clear goal in mind.

To promote means to make the faith known and to live the faith. To protect means to prevent deviations from occurring.

This Dicastery has worked to resolve many controversies in the past years—from declaring that priests should not bless same-sex couples to clarifying which coronavirus vaccines present the least amount of ethical concerns.

It also published a guide or vademecum to help bishops manage possible cases of abuse within their dioceses.

The Vademecum is an aid that clearly gathers the existing guidelines to help bishops and religious superiors who manage the accusations of abuse of minors that come to their congregations or dioceses.

Under the leadership of Cardinal Ladaria, the documents published in recent years by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith do not stop at confronting the sex abuse scandal. They also work to help promote unity in different parts of the Church around the world.

These documents have not shyed away from difficult and topical subjects. They included offering guidelines reiterating the Church's rejection of euthanasia and its commitment to palliative care.
