Cardinal Matteo Zuppi will travel to Russia's capital city of Moscow on June 28-29 as part of Pope Francis' envoy.
The Vatican announced that the visit aims to strengthen “gestures of humanity that can contribute to promoting a solution to the current tragic situation and find paths toward a just peace.”
An official from the Secretariat of State will also accompany the Cardinal. The trip's message will most likely reflect Pope Francis' constant appeals for peace.
POPE FRANCIS
October 2, 2022
My appeal is addressed above all to the president of the Russian Federation, whom I beg to stop, also for the love of his people, this spiral of violence and death.
Cardinal Zuppi's trip follows his recent visit to Kyiv on June 5-6. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other officials.
During this visit, the Cardinal stressed the Vatican's willingness to help through humanitarian aid and diplomatic paths.
