While praying the Angelus with a crowd in St. Peter's Square, Pope Francis spoke out against fear.
POPE FRANCIS
Jesus says that the true fear we should have is of throwing away our own life. Jesus says,“Yes, be afraid of that.” It is like saying: you do not need to be afraid of being misunderstood and criticized, of losing prestige and economic advantages in order to remain faithful to the Gospel. No, rather of wasting your existence in the pursuit of trivial things that do not fill life with meaning.
He also dedicated a few words to the 46 inmates who died last week during a riot in a Honduran prison.
POPE FRANCIS
I was very saddened by what happened a few days ago in the Women's Penitentiary Center of Támara in Honduras. Terrible violence between rival gangs sowed death and suffering. I pray for the deceased; I pray for the family members.
The Pope recalled the 40th anniversary of the disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi—the daughter of a Vatican employee—and expressed his sorrow to her relatives. Emanuela's brother, Pietro Orlandi, was in the audience.
POPE FRANCIS
These days mark the 40th anniversary of the disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi. I would like to express, once again, my closeness to the family members, especially to her mother, and assure them of my prayers. I keep in mind all families who bear the pain of a departed loved one.
The Vatican allowed a group of people to be in the Square with banners calling for an investigation into Emanuela's disappearance. Months ago, Pope Francis asked that the Vatican gather as much information as possible to uncover more answers from the disappearance.
