Archbishop Georg Gänswein will be leaving the Vatican. The Holy See announced that he will return to his home diocese of Freiburg in southwest Germany on July 1.

Officially, he was the Prefect of the Pontifical Household from 2012 until February 2023. But in practice, he stepped down in January 2020. This was one of his last appearances.

From that time on, Fr. Leonardo Sapienza accompanied the Pope at audiences. The Vatican has not offered any explanation for this.

Archbishop Gänswein explained in his book, 'Nothing but the Truth,' that Pope Francis asked him to devote himself completely to Pope Benedict XVI. He claims that this meant relieving him of his post.
