After three hours of surgery, the medical team that operated on Pope Francis delivered good news.
DR. SERGIO ALFIERI
Good afternoon to all. First of all, the Holy Father is well. I think this is the news you and the whole world have been waiting for.
The Pope's surgeon explained that the various operations Pope Francis underwent in the past had produced several internal scars that created his painful hernia.
The doctors were able to remove adhesions from previous operations and insert a mesh to help repair his abdominal wall. Fortunately, the operation went smoothly and even right after surgery, the Pope still has his sense of humor.
DR. SERGIO ALFIERI
The Holy Father responded well to both the surgery and the anesthesia. Once he was awake, he joked with me.
The doctor also clarified that Pope Francis does not have any other illness, ruling out any pre-existing theories of cancer.
According to the doctors, in the operation that the Pope had in July 2021, there was no problem with the anesthesia. So the fear of anesthesia that Pope Francis had previously spoken about is not due to any past negligence.
DR. SERGIO ALFIERI
The Holy Father has never had any problem with the general anesthesia done here two years ago or now. Although clearly no one likes to be operated on and put to sleep.
To ensure full recovery from the surgery, the Vatican has canceled all of Pope Francis' activities through June 18.
