Last night, a car entered at full speed through the Sant'Anna gate, one of the entrances to the Vatican. Although the security team asked the driver to stop, it sped up and burst into Vatican territory, bypassing two checkpoints of the Swiss Guards and the Vatican City State Gendarmerie.
In an attempt to stop the vehicle, the Gendarmerie inspector shot at one of the front wheels and hit the left fender. Despite the gunshot, the car continued to move forward.
All the alarms were sounded and the guards closed the door that allows access to the back of St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Gardens and Casa Santa Marta, where Pope Francis lives.
The car finally stopped at a small courtyard near the Apostolic Palace. The driver got out and was detained by the guards. He was a man in his 40s and showed signs of mental instability. He spent the night in a Vatican jail cell.
