Pope Francis has expressed his concern for the catastrophic floods that devastated central-northern Italy.
In a telegram sent to Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna, the Pope said he is praying for all of those affected.
The floods are considered historic. They were caused by the violent rainfall and overflowing of rivers in the Emilia Romagna region. The government has deployed up to 20 helicopters and more than 3,000 workers and volunteers.
More than 10,000 people have been evacuated and Formula 1 has announced the cancellation of the Grand Prix race that was scheduled to take place in the affected area.
