The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, did not hesitate to emphasize the Christian identity of his country to Pope Francis. He said that Hungary is fighting to stay on the path of faith.
Hungary is one of the few countries in Europe where the government leaders publicly identify as Christians and where they hold an opposing view of gender ideology.
The Pope and Prime Minister agree on some topics. For example, minutes after the two heads of state met, Pope Francis also criticized gender ideology in his address to the country's authorities.
But the two share different approaches to the way the faith is expressed at the political level and also on social issues, such as the reception of migrants.
The two leaders met for over half an hour in the capital city.
