In his weekly catechesis, Pope Francis reflected on martyrdom. He noted that there have been more martyrs killed for their faith today than in the early days of Christianity. One example he gave was Yemen.
POPE FRANCIS
In this very land, there have been brilliant testimonies of faith, such as that of the Missionary Sisters of Charity, who have paved the way there. They are still present today in Yemen, where they offer assistance to the sick, elderly and disabled. Some of them have been martyred, but the rest continue to risk their lives for their work.
In 1998 and 2016, jihadists raided the residences in Yemen where the missionaries worked caring for the elderly and disabled.
For the Pope, the actions of these religious women are an example of evangelization. Their love was the key to overcoming the religious barriers that seperated them from the Muslims in Yemen. For this reason, he encouraged those present at the General Audience to follow in their example.
