Pope Francis will not be present at the traditional Stations of the Cross at the Colosseum. The Vatican Press Office has issued a statement saying the Pope will follow the event from his residence in Casa Santa Marta “due to the intense cold these days.”
A low of 50 degrees Farenheit is expected tonight in Rome between 9 and 11pm, the same time as the Stations of the Cross. It has been less than a week since the Pope was discharged from Rome's Gemelli Hospital.
He was suffering from an infectious-based bronchitis but recovered with the help of antibiotics. The doctors have advised the 86-year-old Pope to be cautious.
This week, the Pope presided over outdoor events such as the Palm Sunday Mass and the General Audience in St. Peter's Square. Each of these events took place in the morning and not in the cold night air of Rome.
