China has unilaterally ordained a new bishop for the diocese of Shanghai. Bishop Shen Bin was transferred from the diocese of Haimen.
The Vatican has not yet commented on this descision, which is a direct violation of the agreement they signed with China in 2018. The full content of the accord has not been published. But it was renewed in 2020 and 2022 with the goal of avoiding this type of unilateral decision.
Shanghai's auxiliary bishop, Thaddeus Ma Daqin was recognized by the Vatican. He has been imprisoned in the Chinese seminary of Sheshan since 2012. His crime was publicly distancing himself from the Chinese patriotic Church.
