Nicaragua has deported Marcel Diouf, the chargé d'affaires of the Nunciature in the capital city of Managua. Before him, in 2022, the Ortega regime had already expelled the Apostolic Nuncio, Waldemar Stanisław Sommer.
Diouf moved to Costa Rica, along with 300,000 Nicaraguans, after given 7 days to leave the country on March 10.
That same day, the Argentinean news portal, Infobae, published an interview with Pope Francis, where he condemned the imprisonment of Bishop Rolando Álvarez. He also said that the only explanation he found for President Ortega's decisions is that he is suffering from an “imbalance.”
Since 2018, the Ortega government has been specifically persecuting the Catholic Church, after priests across the country welcomed anti-regime protesters into their parishes. The authorities have already expelled nuns, such as the Missionaries of Charity, deported 222 opponents and imprisoned the bishop of Matagalpa.
