Pope Francis has renewed the Council of Cardinals, a body instituted in 2013 to advise him on how to govern the Church. It is made up of the Pope and nine cardinals.
The Pope has appointed two new Spanish cardinals to the group: Fernando Vérgez and Juan José Omella.
The other new members of the Council of Cardinals are Gérald Lacroix, Archbishop of Quebec; Jean-Claude Hollerich, Archbishop of Luxembourg; and Sérgio da Rocha, Archbishop of San Salvador de Bahía.
These new members join the current four cardinals: Seán Patrick O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston; Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay; Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Archbishop of Kinshasa and Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State.
