To mark the beginning of Lent, Pope Francis presided over the Mass for Ash Wednesday at the Basilica of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill in Rome.
After the blessing of the ashes, Cardinal Mauro Piacenza places them on the Pope's head. He then does the same for the Cardinal. As the choir begins to sing a hymn, all the faithful come forward to receive the ashes.
