Alexander Hernández is one of the 222 political prisoners deported from Nicaragua to the United States. He says he was able to get out of prison thanks to Bishop Rolando Álvarez.

Bishop had given a chance to leave the country. But he made a promise to himself that he would not leave the country unless we were all free.
Bishop Álvarez helped others, but is still in prison himself. Alexander had hoped that the two would both fly to Washington D.C., but the bishop remained behind in Nicaragua.

I kept an eye on each person boarding the plane and I was confused when the plane took off and he never got on.
It wasn't until we had arrived in the U.S. and we were all reunited that we discovered that Bishop Álvarez had been arrested, tried and sentenced to over twenty years in prison.
Alexander is now trying to start a new life, recover from the physical and emotional wounds caused by his time in prison and look for ways to help his loved ones still in Nicaragua.
