From Pope Francis' knee problems to the country's internal conflict escalating, the Pope's much anticipated trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan has had its fair share of challenges. But despite these difficulties, the Pope is traveling to Africa.

The theme of the Pope's visit to my country is, in French—tous réconciliés dans le Christ, all reconciled in Christ—to show a country that is facing difficulty and war. So I am grateful to the Holy Father, that despite this difficult situation, but he is keeping his word to us to come to Africa, and specifically to my country, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The internal conflict in the eastern part of the country began in 2012 and has led to 400,000 people being displaced from their homes. Different rebel groups have caused unrest and violence in the country over various political and economic issues.

Today, the situation has become a little more complicated because the presence of the main rebel group, M23, is really obvious.
The peace agreements are not respected and so while there are those arrangements, the war continues and there are casualties and it continues. So, this is really a very complicated situation.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is a majority Christian country with 95% of the population. Though the war is political, it has made their situation difficult. Fr. Anselme says that throughout this conflict, the priests are trying to help their communities live out their faith.

Christians live a normal life. But when there is a war, it is also difficult to pray well, especially in this part and especially for priests. I think, if I put myself in their place, it is not so easy because they need to reassure Christians.
And so this is a situation that worries Christians and the priests as well.
Home to the largest Roman Catholic community in Africa, people in the Democratic Republic of Congo see this papal trip as a blessing and opportunity for change.
