Cardinal George Pell was a leading figure in the College of Cardinals and many came to bid him a final farewell at his funeral Mass in Rome.
Among those present was the former Prefect of the now Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller. The Australian Ambassador to the Holy See, Chiara Porro, also attended the funeral.
During the homily, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re mourned the sudden death of Cardinal Pell due to complications following a scheduled hip surgery. He also recalled how difficult the Cardinal's last years were due to the 'wrongful conviction ' he faced for allegations of child abuse until the High Court of Australia overturned the ruling.
As he usually does at the funerals of deceased cardinals, Pope Francis led the final prayers and said a final goodbye to Cardinal Pell.
