The Holy See Press Office has issued a new statement giving an update on Pope emeritus Benedict XVI's health.
According to Director Matteo Bruni, 'last night the Pope emeritus rested well. He also participated in a Mass yesterday afternoon that was celebrated in his room.' At the moment, 'his condition is stable.'
During the Consistory this past August, Spanish Cardinal Fernando Vérgez explained that Pope emeritus Benedict XVI had difficulty moving and speaking.
CARD. FERNANDO VÉRGEZ
We just came to say hello. He's fine. He looks like a 95-year-old person, you can tell. He hardly speaks, but he recognizes people. For example, he made me director of telecommunications when he was Pope. And I told him: 'Holy Father, I was Cardinal Pironio's secretary' and he said 'yes.' So, he recognizes people. But well, it was just a little greeting. And then, he gave us both a blessing with Pope Francis.
The Pope emeritus remains in the Mater Ecclesiae monastery on the Vatican grounds, accompanied by his personal health team.
