During the Angelus on the fourth Sunday of Advent, Pope Francis expressed his concern for Eastern Europe. He specifically remembered the situation in the humanitarian corridor in Lachin, in the South Caucasus. There, some 120,000 Armenians are currently isolated without food, medicine or basic necessities.

POPE FRANCIS
I am concerned about the situation in the Lachin Corridor in the South Caucasus. In particular, I am concerned about people's fragile humanitarian conditions there, which are at further risk of deteriorating during the winter season. I call on all those involved to commit to finding peaceful solutions for the good of the people.

On December 12, Azerbaijan closed the only route connecting Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians to the country, which has led to a 'humanitarian blockade.' This is the second closure this month so far.

The Pope also referenced the political and social crisis taking place in Peru. He encouraged authorities to use dialogue to put an end to the violence.

Pope Francis once again remembered Ukraine. He asked pilgrims not to forget their suffering, especially, that of children, the elderly and the sick.
